IN PHOTOS: Odd, eerie and so-old-it-must-be-haunted DC-area real estate
In honor of Halloween, we're taking a look back at some of the creepiest, oddest and oldest D.C. area properties featured over the past year or so in our Saturday real estate galleries.


2494 Simonson Rd, Farnham, VA 22460
Built in 1699, the Indian Banks estate on the Northern Neck was once home to George Washington's aunt, Esther Ball, (he even initialed one of the bricks), but its history dates back even further. In 1608, Captain John Smith visited a Native American village near the present-day property, which sits at the confluence of the Rappahannock River and Morattico Creek.

A pirate ship for sale on the Northern Neck in the summer of 2022 is now an Airbnb vacation rental. Now named the Jolly Lodger, the two-bedroom boat is docked in Callao on the Potomac River. Check the Airbnb listing here.


11319 Bristersburg Rd, Catlett, VA
According to the October 2022 Zillow.com listing, Mount Horeb Methodist Episcopal Church in Catlett first built a meeting house on Bristersburg Road in 1887. In 1927, the old building was torn down and the new church was built.

Built in 1743, the Shenstone Manor House outside Leesburg was one of the nation's oldest homes for sale in September 2022 on Realtor.com.
